If someone told me a year ago that I would be running my own Multi 6-figure Print On Demand online business, I would have outright laughed in their face.
A little over a year ago, I was working 40 hours a week as an Educator at a nonprofit and although my job was rewarding, I was barely making enough money to get by.

It was such an amazing and special time for my husband and I! However, when my maternity leave was coming to an end, we started having issues trying to figure out our new norm and work schedules with our newborn.
Daycare in our area is OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive and once we crunched the numbers, my take-home pay (after paying for daycare) would have been only 400$ a month. I could not fathom leaving my son for hours and hours to go back to a job that I didn’t even enjoy for literally no pay.
I knew right then and there I WANTED and NEEDED to make a change to make a better life for me and my family.
I was not going back to the 9-5 grind living paycheck to paycheck again.
I started to look at how to make money online from home and discovered Print on Demand & Etsy. I loved the idea of having my own business, getting to create fun products, working from home or while traveling, spending time with my family, and being my own boss.
So I went all in and I opened my first shop!
I was so excited the only problem was, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing when I first started. I spent hundreds of hours creating new designs, trying new products, launching daily listings and…. Crickets. I wasn’t making any sales.

So what was I doing wrong in the beginning?
1) I wasted so much time and money on all the wrong things
I spent DAYS focusing on trying to make my storefront look perfect with fancy banners and logos, making ads that never brought customers in, and trying to set up and use advanced software I had no idea how to use (I’m looking at you Photoshop).
I didn’t know what was important to focus on and what was completely unnecessary. This caused me to waste hundreds of dollars and countless hours on things I didn’t need to run a successful online business!
2) I kept trying to sell what everyone else was selling in overly saturated markets.
When I was starting out, like so many Etsy sellers, I tried to sell popular items in really saturated markets.
I could never get any of my goods seen because there were way too many people doing the EXACT same thing.
I figured out that you don’t have to just sell apparel in these high-competition niches to be successful. I found hundreds of niches that have little competition and high demand and started making designs for a wide range of particular products to set myself apart from the competition. Once I realized how to separate myself from the pack and find winning high-demand & low-competition niches, my sales EXPLODED bringing in tons of money.
3) I thought you had to make super intricate tech-savvy designs to create a best-selling product.
The first items that I made had people viewing my listings, but no one was buying.
I got so discouraged and couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong! I realized I was so focused on making super fancy designs with advanced software (cough…cough Photoshop) that I didn’t even realize you don’t need to have crazy design skills to make a Best Selling Product! So I stopped making things so difficult for myself and started using specific graphics and highly selective font pairings instead. It is so much FASTER and EASIER to create highly successful products and that allowed me to quickly make repeat best sellers bringing in tons of revenue!
4) I had no idea how to optimize my listings in order to get onto the first Etsy search page.
When I first started, I would put up listings just thinking that “the pictures are what anybody looks at as long as the pictures are ok, my products will be best sellers.”
Boy was I WRONG.
I didn’t realize that by not mastering the art of SEO Marketing, I was actually preventing my goods from being seen on any online platform. Once I figured out how to make the PERFECT title, tags, and description for my goods, it allowed me to quickly create trending products that would come up on the first Etsy and Google search pages EVERY SINGLE TIME.
5) I listened to bad advice from business and marketing gurus
I spent time and money on courses and coaching programs that just never seemed to work. All the advice was either too focused on having a “successful mindset” with no practical steps on how to create a business or was way too technical, complex, outdated, or just not applicable.
Some of this information even made me feel like I wasn't smart enough, creative enough, confident or even capable of making money from home. A lot of these “gurus” even said that the print on demand business is just too saturated and I was way too late to the game to ever make money.
But the truth is, being successful with a Print on Demand business or any online business is simply mastering the basics and repeating them consistently! It’s about applying simple formulas that work and repeating them to create best-selling products!
